Living In Lusaka Local Coffee Shops

We have been living in Lusaka for a while now, and here are some of the local coffee shops that we enjoy. There are several new, and some quite well established, coffee shops in the vicinity of Shakespeare Court. It is getting to the point when you are fairly spoilt for choice! Here are some of our favourites:

Blue Moon this is situated on the corner of the shopping mall at Woodlands close to the Pick and Pay supermarket. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxed, the staff are really helpful and eager to please, and there is a choice of indoor or outside seating. The bagels are the best in town! There is also an interesting range of pastries and cakes, which are complemented well by the very good coffee. You could also treat yourself to a 'Blizzard' a mixture between an ice cream sundae and a milkshake. Very yummy!  The shop is not particularly big, but does have some out door seating and is well staffed and well run.  We would recommend it - a great place to stop after you have done that all important shopping.

Mistral Coffee Shop -  this is an open air, but shaded and secluded coffee shop in a garden just off Chindo Road. If you turn right out of Shakespeare Court, go straight over the crossroads and head to the traffic lights along the Leopards Hill Road, as if you were heading into Lusaka. Turn left at the traffic lights and the shop is a few hundred metres on the right.  It is well signposted.  The shop has recently changed hands, and we have not eaten here since the new owners have taken over, but we would recommend it for a quiet and relaxed drink.

Kilimanjaro's is a lodge on the Leopards Hill Road, just before the American International School. It is well sign posted. This site is gradually being developed and is still under some construction. The main attractions here are the lovely grounds, the child friendly environment, with the provision of toys and games on the lawn, and the miniature horses that roam the grounds. The coffee is good and there is a range of snacks and pastries on the menu. There is a large covered verandah which is ideal for a lazy linger in the shade.

Buzz Cafe is right next door to Shakespeare Court at the Crossroads Shopping Mall. It offers a range of snacks and drinks and is reasonably priced. The service is sometimes a bit slow so do not go here if you are in a hurry! There is a mixture of seating both inside the shop and on the pavement outside. This cafe stays open into the evening as well and there is usually a lively and friendly atmosphere.

Mugg and Bean - This has recently opened in the new shopping centre at Manda Hill. It is a popular meeting point for people and offers a range of coffees, drinks and snacks. It is a bit more expensive than some of the more local coffee shops but is a good resting place after a busy time at the shops in the mall.

Zebra Cafe - this is on Addis Ababa Road - heading towards Manda Hill.  It is a lovely shady coffee shop and simple restaurant offering a good range of food and drink.  There is also a craft shop, hairdresser, wooden furniture show room and Belgium Chocolate Shop on the same site.  The coffee shop also displays the work of local artists.  It is a great place to potter and relax and is only a 10 minute drive from Shakespeare Court.
