Tailings Dams Tested For Copper

TAILINGS DAMS TESTED FOR COPPER: Technical studies by the China Non-ferrous Metals Company (CNMC) to assess the possibility of extracting copper on a commercial basis from the Mufulira Tailings dams have started at a cost of US$5 million. The study is the result of an agreement between Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines-Investment Holdings and CNMC.

BONETTI APPOINTED CHIPOLOPOLO COACH: Former Juventus defender Dario Bonetti has been named as coach to steer Zambia's bid to reach the next African Nations Cup finals. The Italian has signed a two-year deal and will take charge of the team in September. The 48-year-old Bonetti, who also played for Roma and AC Milan and won two caps, has limited credentials having worked with brother Ivano at Dundee and coached several lower league Italian sides plus Dinamo Bucharest for three months last year. Bonetti replaces Frenchman Hervé Renard who left the Zambia job to take over as Angola coach in April.

'EDUCATED WESTERNERS HAVE NEVER HEARD OF ZAMBIA': The chairman of the Tourism Council of Zambia, Mark O'Donnell, says that TCZ's research suggests that a staggering 60% of wealthy, highly educated people in developed countries either have never heard of Zambia or know nothing about the country. He has challenged the government to urgently adopt practical measures if tourism is to become one of the main pillars of the economy. “Red tape is holding the industry back. We need to see licences removed, less government intervention, and for the government to facilitate rather than regulate; we must make our products more affordable so that we attract more people into the country.”

PRODUCTION AT BWANA MKUBWA TO BE SUSPENDED: Canada's First Quantum Minerals will suspend production at its Bwana Mkubwa copper processing plant in August after running out of raw materials. Bwana Mkubwa has exhausted the copper ore oxide it imported from neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and operations will be suspended until the plant can source other economically viable raw materials. It produced 5000 tonnes of copper in the first six months of 2010. Bwana Mkubwa resumed output in January after authorities in the DRC partially lifted the ban on copper ore exports, which forced the closure of the plant in October 2008.
