International Schools In Lusaka

There are six international schools in Lusaka, all with very different characteristics. Five of them teach in English, including the Italian school, and the French school teaches in French. Below you will find brief descriptions and links to each of these schools.

American International School of Lusaka
The American International School of Lusaka is situated on over 40 acres on the outskirts of Lusaka. The campus is purpose built and there are construction plans for expansion in the near future. It is an exciting time at the school!

The school community is warm and friendly and takes the business of educating children very seriously. The school offers rigorous programs under the umbrella of the International Baccalaureate program. Specifically, the school has a continuum that includes the Primary Years Program (PYP), the Middle Years Program (MYP), and the IB Diploma.

Baobab College
The BAOBAB schools are unique and stand tall among all the schools in Zambia. In difficult conditions the College thrives and often stands out by being different. French School
The French School Champollion Lusaka was founded in 1980 at the initiative of French families residing in Zambia and in conjunction with the French Embassy in Lusaka. The property comprises six classrooms, a computer room, a laboratory, office (secretarial and management), a large yard, a multipurpose hall, a sports field, a hall of visual arts and music.  The school teaches in French.

International School of Lusaka (ISL)
The International School of Lusaka (ISL) is a self-governing educational institution offering both primary and secondary education to the children of the international community, foreign residents, and Zambian nationals.

The international nature is reflected in the curriculum on offer and in the nationalities of both students and educators. Through an integrated program that meets the needs of a wide range of cultures, the school prepares students to communicate effectively as citizens of the world who will cherish life-long learning.

Founded in 1963, is one of the oldest international schools on the continent of Africa, and is currently the third largest such school in the Association of International Schools in Africa.

There are over 700 students from over 60 different nationalities. The teaching staff consists of over 50 professional educators from 15 countries. The School is overseen by a Board of Governors, 9 of whom are elected by the ISL Association. The Association is composed of the parents of the students attending ISL and the professional teaching staff.

Italian School
The School’s curriculum is based on the philosophy that all children have the right to “Excellence in Education” through which their academic, personal and social growth is nurtured and developed:
“The Italian School of Lusaka will prepare students to be lifelong learners, critical thinkers, effective communicators, and wise decision-makers.The school will maintain an environment that promotes intellectual challenge, creativity, social and emotional growth, and the healthy and physical development of each student.”
The School consists of three sections:
- Kindergarden - Nursery and Reception
- Primary - Grade1 to Grade6
- Junior High School - Grade7 to Grade9
The School was founded under the Zambian-Italian Cultural Centre in 1968 and moved to its present campus in 1971. From 1993 it developed into a multi-cultural English-medium school in which Italian is taught as a foreign language.

Lusaka International Community School (LICS)
Lusaka International Community School (LICS) is an international school situated in Roma, a quiet residential district in the Zambian capital. The school serves the international community seeking educational continuity with schools elsewhere in the world. LICS takes the CIE (University of Cambridge International Examinations) educational system as its base and provides a requisite range and variety of subjects in academic disciplines, as well as extra-curricular activities in cultural, creative and sporting areas. The LICS secondary school curriculum culminates in the International GCSE (see below). The Council of International Schools (www.cois.org) accredited LICS in July 2001 following an intensive process of evaluation. This accreditation ensures the quality of the programme the school offers. In 2010 LICS has to undergo the re-accreditation process.
